The Beach – Traverse City – 2016

My family started going to Traverse City when I was young. My mom and I took a trip there when my sister was accepted to Interlochen the summer before her senior year.  We both fell in love with the sandy beach, the calm bay, and a condo complex called The Beach. Anytime that I can convince Eric to go there { which is practically every summer } we do. It’s our go-to vacation spot – especially now with the littles. The condos each have a little patio or balcony, and they step out directly onto the sandy beach. No hiking down stairs, crossing busy streets, or schlepping it 5 blocks with all of your sand toys, snacks, sunscreen, towels, kids – you know the struggle…… Anyway, at the beach, you just open your slider, and hear the soothing sounds of the waves crashing.

The condos are fully furnished, have a kitchen, separate bedroom, living room, and eating area, jetted tubs, laundry, a heated outdoor pool, and housekeeping service just like a hotel. I really don’t work for the hotel honest!!  – I just love it there! Plus Traverse City has so much to offer, shops, restaurants, entertainment – just such a beautiful and cool city to visit. We also did one night at the Great Wolf Lodge, and the kids had an absolute blast – as always! We got to spend a few nights with some great friends as well, and I even squeezed in a mini-session with our great friends “The Z family.” Their beautiful family session’s blog post will be up very soon!

We visited Moomers one of the evenings, and they aren’t voted “Best ice cream in America” for nothin!  Man was it delicious.  The best ice cream, I’ve ever eaten, and I eat more ice cream than I should!

We also tried putt putt golf with the kids for the first time, and shopped all around downtown TC. It was fabulous.  Another night we drove up Old Mission Peninsula, went to the Mission Point Lighthouse, and had dinner at The Jolly Pumpkin.  If you are ever in the area, you must check it out.  The truffled fries.  Soooo yummy!

Welp, much to my families chagrin I never travel without my camera, and LOVE photographing them on the beach and vacation in general. I’m totally sentimental when it comes to trying to hold on to these little pieces of my kids being small. They grow so dang fast, and I try to hold on to as much of the fun stuff as I can. This year in an attempt to step up my game for sunset shots, I brought extra lighting along as well. Eric and the kids were less than enthused to have me chasing them around with a light stand and umbrella, but I was so happy with some of the shots. Off-camera flash is my current photography obsession, and I’m constantly looking for excuses to use my lights! { Sorry kids}

I’m working on trying to take a “lifestyle” approach with them some { as they hate posing for me } but I also can’t help but try and get some posed shots. I’m a mom, what can I say. Here is a little peek at my favorite shots from the trip. Many of them are more about the meaning to me as a mom, and don’t fit all of the “photography rules” but I love them just the same.

Until next year beach….. thanks for the fun and memories!
